Xunantunich Tour
Belize Xunantunich Tour
The site of Xunantunich, "stone woman", flourished between AD 700 and AD 1000. In its early history, it may have been under the rulership of the Maya site of Naranjo and later gained its independence when the rulership of Naranjo started to weaken. The tallest structure at the site is "El Castillo" and stands at 40 meters. It is adorned with carved stucco friezes containing astronomical symbols as the sun god, the moon and Venus. Four major groups of architecture stand within the main center containing temples, shrines, 2 ball courts, residential areas, altars and carved stelae.
